A Steuben light fixture from 1908, which the Vadnaises found at Tap Lighting, is mounted on the original coffered ceiling. An open landing with added windows on the second floor allows light to pour down into the living room, a space that is elegant yet easily lived in. Inside, the stairway was reconfigured to bring more light into the home and add more space in the kitchen. The dining room has its original built-ins and stained glass. The couple hired John O’Brien of Flagg Coastal Homes for structural help and Howard Taft for interior design assistance. “Research was imperative to the remodel,” Debbie said.Īrmed with design books such as “Bungalow Kitchens” by Jane Powell, Debbie and Paul turned the tired house into a neighborhood jewel. Paul was in charge of payments and scheduling, and Debbie, a retired first-grade teacher, was the detail person. From then on, the couple divided the work. Paul, an underground engineering contractor and owner of Vadnais Corp., took on that job. “It just seems that a lot of homeowners are really embracing fixing up old homes.”įor the Vadnaises, the first step was straightening out the sloping house. “We wanted to celebrate people doing the right thing,” Haley said. The GEM (Going the Extra Mile) award was the idea of Russ Haley, a member of the historical association’s board of directors. So the couple bought the 2,750-square-foot home, which was built in 1912, and started on a yearlong restoration that would earn them this year’s first-ever GEM award from the Coronado Historical Association. “But we loved the house, and we loved the footprint of the house,” Debbie said. The floor was noticeably sloped, and additions and renovations strayed from the home’s Craftsman roots. What they first saw in 2010 was a nearly 100-year-old house that was showing its age. ‘When we walked in, both our hearts were pounding really hard, because we both knew it was the house we wanted,” said Debbie Vadnais of the Craftsman bungalow she owns with her husband, Paul, in Coronado.
